Run Entirely By Volunteers
The South Staffordshire Narrow boat Company Ltd is run entirely by volunteers who generously give their time freely, to provide day trips on the canal, which we believe benefit our passengers.
Some volunteers are qualified skippers and can take out as many trips a year as they wish depending on their availability and the number of trips which are booked.
The boat is always operated by a designated Skipper and two crew members. Sometimes joined by a trainee as a fourth crew member.
All of them have received training in how to operate the boat in a safe manner and are familiar with all emergency procedures.
Licences & Accreditation
Some of our volunteers are holders of a Boatmasters' Licence and others hold the Certificate in Community Boat Management, a qualification required by the Marine and Coastguard Agency.
As an Accredited Training Centre we are able to train any new volunteers up to the required standard. We currently have six qualified trainers.
General Maintenance & Administration
Other volunteers are involved in the general maintenance and may prefer not to steer the boat. Without them the cost of running trips could be prohibitive to some of the groups that we take out.
Everyone Is Welcome
Volunteers are welcome from all backgrounds, genders, ages, religions and ethnic groups.
Everyone is actively involved in the running of the boat, either in the organisation of the company or actively managing the trips.
Retired or working, we welcome new volunteers who can join us for weekday and weekend trip. No skills or boating experience is needed. It may be you simply had a holiday on a narrowboat, and you now wish to make use of your experience to help others.
Anyone with a love of the outdoors and/or has basic skills in carpentry, painting, gardening and housekeeping are welcomed.

We are a non-profit making registered Charity (Registered Charity No: 1000868) and are supported by voluntary contribution.
