South Staffordshire Narrowboat Co Ltd

Health & Safety Policy

Please observe these notes and enjoy a safe trip
  • Please make sure that your group members wear suitable footwear to step onto the metal surface of the boat, including steps or lift. Ill fitting slippers are to be avoided.
  • Only crew members can operate the lift.
  • A carer should accompany and help the wheelchair users on first, to position the wheelchair at the rear of the cabin, close to the washroom. No more than four wheelchair users can be carried, due to weight, and electric wheelchairs or those with batteries removed are not allowed.
  • Care must be taken in making sure that other group members follow onto the boat slowly, so that they can be seated comfortably. Some passengers can be in a hurry to follow the person in front of them.
  • Because, whilst carrying out their duties, our Crew may from time to time become aware of adults and children at risk, hirers should be aware that we operate a Safeguarding Policy.
  • If you provide drinks for your passengers, please do not overfill their cups. Should there be an odd bump when entering a lock, hot drinks might otherwise be spilled.
  • Please provide all carers and group leaders with a copy of the information sheet and also the confirmation of booking form, in order to bring all that is necessary. Useful items include favourite CD’s, a cushion or blanket, incontinence pads and spare clothing if you think that a group member might need it.
  • As we no longer have a rubbish facility, please remind your group leader or carers that all rubbish, including clinical sanitary waste in the washroom yellow bag, together with the used paper towel bag, is to be removed by you and taken home for disposal. Please leave our Ernest Thomas II in a clean and tidy condition.
  • Water from our tank has to be boiled before use, so please bring bottled water for cold drinks and keep passengers hydrated in warm weather.
  • Dogs are not allowed on board, with the exception of Guide dogs.
  • Group staff must ensure that all passengers are safe and adequately supported at all times. This is not the responsibility of the crew.
  • We operate a no smoking and no vaping policy anywhere on the narrowboat.
  • Very occasionally, a crew member may enter the water. He or she will be helped by the Crew and passengers are asked to remain in the cabin and not assist.

Thank you
